Client: Insurance claim
Project location: Cookham, Berkshire
Contract value: £310,000
This difficult subsidence insurance claim was brought to Stress UK following an unsuccessful previous remedial repair scheme. The cause of the subsidence damage was found to be a swallow hole and underground stream. Widespread structural damage had occurred to the main house and outbuildings together with the driveway, paths and drainage.
Stress carried out a detailed probe and trial pit survey of the site to establish the extent of the underground features together with drainage and services layout. An extensive ground stabilisation scheme could then be designed using our patented and unique ReFORCE permeation system to both strengthen the ground, underpin affected wall foundations and stabilise the hard standings.
Following completion of the geotechnical remedial works the superstructure of the house and outbuildings could be repaired using a combination of some rebuilding but, mainly installation of HeliBar across the fractures, crack bonding with repointing using colour matched heritage lime mortar. Full internal refurbishment was then carried out bringing the building back to quality condition and ready for the client to move in upon successful completion of their insurance claim.
An innovative and cost-effective method of re-establishing a badly damaged and difficult to repair interesting property.

This was another project where we were commissioned to carry out some specific remedial structural repairs to brickwork but were then challenged to find a solution for replacement of load bearing stonework at high level. We produced a temporary works design which was checked by CTP Consulting, and we thank Cliveden Conservation Workshop for their excellent stonework. It was a pleasure to work with a forward-thinking team and client.
