Main Contractor: Kingerlee Ltd
Project location: Haddenham, Bucks
Budget: £15,000
An old disused Grade II listed public house was being redeveloped into a private dwelling. Due to the building’s protected status and age, the project required a sensitive balance between modern residential requirements and strict heritage preservation.
The main contractor Kingerlee Ltd contacted us to review the condition of the three external walls of the property to design and provide structural repair a strengthening scheme to prevent the need for demolition and rebuilding. In addition, due to an increase in load to two areas of the building foundation remedials were required.
The end gable wall was in extremely poor structural condition, but demolition and rebuilding had been rejected by the local authority conservation officer. Stress provided a practical, economical and heritage acceptable strengthening scheme which complied with the LBP. Crack repairs, window arch strengthening and spandrel wall stiffening were also undertaken to assist the main contractor reduce additional costs and keep to programme.

This was another project where we were commissioned to carry out some specific remedial structural repairs to brickwork but were then challenged to find a solution for replacement of load bearing stonework at high level. We produced a temporary works design which was checked by CTP Consulting, and we thank Cliveden Conservation Workshop for their excellent stonework. It was a pleasure to work with a forward-thinking team and client.
