Lorry strike repair to an historic watermill

Client: Gaters Mill

Project location: Southampton

Budget: £22,000

Damage repairs to Gaters Mill

This historic watermill was struck by an oversized lorry and badly damaged. Stress Heritage Division was commissioned by the owning company to develop a safe system of work for the structural repair and rebuilding of the damaged masonry arch. A repair strategy was prepared by our senior engineering manager and the proposed scope of repairs developed.

Safe system of work

The safe system of work involved altering the temporary works to enable the arch and brickwork above to be supported and rebuilt. As well as designing and installing a masonry reinforcement scheme to both strengthen and stabilise the spandrel brickwork above the damaged arch, we maintained vital vehicle access under the arch throughout the repairs.

Matching bricks

This temporary support then enabled the timber arch former to be custom built and fitted. Once in place the arch could start to be rebuilt using the matching handmade bricks, followed by the spandrel repair above.

The results

The resulting finish delighted both the insurer and the client, delivering modern structural resilience and respecting the building’s heritage signifiance.

This was another project where we were commissioned to carry out some specific remedial structural repairs to brickwork but were then challenged to find a solution for replacement of load bearing stonework at high level. We produced a temporary works design which was checked by CTP Consulting, and we thank Cliveden Conservation Workshop for their excellent stonework. It was a pleasure to work with a forward-thinking team and client.
